If you thought Tesla’s Cybertruck was ready for anything, the U.S. Air Force is putting that to the test, literally. Two of Elon Musk’s stainless steel beasts are heading to a missile range in New Mexico, where they’ll serve as stand-ins for potential enemy vehicles.
Yep, the same truck that’s been called everything from “a dumpster” to “a cheese grater on wheels” will soon face military-grade firepower.
Why the Military Wants the Cybertruck
Here’s why The Air Force are interested:
-
Fortified build: Stainless steel exoskeleton that’s tougher than traditional painted steel or aluminum.
-
48V electrical architecture: Delivers more power and efficiency — a step ahead of most rivals.
-
Distinct design: Angular shape and futuristic profile unlike typical military targets.
The two trucks around $80K each, are part of a larger purchase of 33 vehicles for U.S. Special Operations Command at the White Sands Missile Range.
Performance Under Fire
According to Air Force assessments, the Cybertruck doesn’t crumble the way many vehicles do under major impact. That makes it an interesting test subject for simulating real-world combat scenarios.
Of course, the truck’s sales numbers have taken their own hits. Data from Cox Automotive shows a 51% year-over-year drop in the past three months.
From Stage to Battlefield
It’s been a wild ride for the Cybertruck since Musk unveiled it in 2019 especially after the now-famous “unbreakable” window demo shattered expectations (and glass) on stage.
Now, instead of just turning heads at Superchargers, the Cybertruck is about to find out how it holds up against missiles.
