Tesla Lands in Mumbai: India’s First Showroom Opens

Tesla has officially launched its first-ever showroom in India—situated in Mumbai’s premium Bandra Kurla Complex (BKC). This marks a landmark moment as Tesla jumps into India’s booming electric vehicle (EV) market.

What’s Happening?

  • Prime Location & Lease
Tesla signed a five-year lease for a spacious 4,000 sq ft showroom at Maker Maxity in BKC starting mid-February 2025. The rent is among the highest ever paid for commercial space in India—about Rs 35 lakh per month—and will increase by around 5% annually.

  • Official Opening
The showroom officially opened on July 15 2025, launching the Tesla Experience Centre in BKC. A second showroom is already in the works for Delhi.

The Star Car: Model Y

  • First Delivered Vehicle
The debut car is the Tesla Model Y SUV. It’s produced in China and will cost approximately ₹59.9 lakh ex-showroom (~US $75,000 with duties)
The long-range version offers around 622 km of driving range.

  • Luxury Meets Innovation
Tesla’s Model Y packs a big 15.4” touchscreen, heated and ventilated seats, panoramic glass roof, and cleaner aerodynamic design—featuring minimal physical buttons.

Why Mumbai?

  • The city is India’s financial hub, positioned for luxury carbuyers and easy access to Delhi’s airport.

  • Tesla has also taken lease of a 24,565 sq ft warehouse in Kurla West, Mumbai, for service operations, and a small office space nearby.

Pricing & Market Context

  • Import duties on EVs in India run up to 70–110%, pushing Model Y prices to about ₹60–70 lakh (~US $70,000).

  • Tesla is using a cautious “import first” plan while discussions continue about local manufacturing incentives set by the Indian government .

Significance & Future Outlook

  • Iconic Start: The brand launch was met with enthusiasm—Maharashtra CM Devendra Fadnavis and Transport Minister Pratap Sarnaik praised Tesla for innovation and clean mobility.

  • EV Strategy: Tesla launching superchargers, job openings, and potential local assembly suggests serious plans beyond just showrooms .

  • High-End Focus: With its current pricing, the Model Y targets India’s premium EV audience—competing with brands like BMW and Mercedes rather than mass-market companies.
